The Day After Your Wedding Is Perfect For Formal Portraits

On your wedding day, there are a lot of emotions running high. Between the nerves, the excitement, and the stress of the day, it can be tough to get everyone to slow down long enough to focus on formal portraits. 

By taking your formal portraits the day after your wedding, all of the formalities are out of the way and you can enjoy your time with your spouse.

Colorado is one of my favorite destinations. Taking these photos of Lacy and Dylan was a complete dream. Plus, I love when my couples are willing to follow my lead and not afraid of a little work for some incredible scenery.

It is essential to choose a photographer who understands the weather and how it can affect your photos. For example, in Colorado, the sun sets quickly behind the mountains.

Working with the Lighting

I always make sure to scout locations in advance so that I know where to go and when to be there. We had to plan properly to take advantage of the beautiful golden hour light.

In January in Colorado, it is frigid. When I did this photo session, it was about 45° Farenheight, and Lacey was a real trooper.

We knew we would be in the snow, so before she packed her bags for the trip, she got the perfect coverup and this adorable hat to add some of her personality to the photos.

Be Adventurous and Take A Chance

One of the best parts about having a destination wedding is that you can be more adventurous with your photography.

If you’re getting married at home, you’ve likely seen ALL of the popular photography locations near your venue. But when you travel for your wedding, everything is new! This allows you to try something unique and create truly one-of-a-kind memories.

When we came to this mini brick wall and the snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains in the distance, I knew it was time to create something magical. 

This is why I ask my couples to trust in my expertise. Putting it into words never really works, but when I showed them the different angles and the landscape vs. portrait views, I knew they were happy with this choice to come out the day after! Not to toot my own horn, but GOSH…I love these moments!!
